Εκτύπωση

The Solidarity Committee for Refugees in Chios “Lathra?” met the people who are on hunger strike at the Souda Camp on Sunday 22nd May 2016.

It was the 8th day of the hunger strike of 22 people from 11 families whose nationalities are Syrian, Palestinian-Syrian and Iraqi. Young people, aged 17 and 18, participate too. All of them have stated their will to ask for asylum in Greece but their applications haven’t got examined yet due to the inefficiency of the authorities to run the procedure.

It is overwhelming to listen to  them describing the conditions under which they’ve been living for the past two months, that is, after their arrival on Chios Island and the implementation of the agreement between European Union and Turkey, which has practically trapped them on Chios. These are a few of their own phrases:

“We’re dying here little by little”

“Time is passing without us having any information at all”

“We’ve been staying here in squalid conditions”

“We fled from the Syrian war to offer our children prospects of a better life and education”

“We decided to start a hunger strike because we want our voice to be heard”

“We want to live but you hardly call this a life”

“In the developed European countries the concept of time is considered to be one of the most precious things. But it’s not the same when it comes to us. It’s like we are out of time and this means out of life too”

The hunger strikers are getting only water, they are evidently weak, they’re suffering from low blood sugar and pressure while some of them have previous health problems. Also some have been taken to hospital to receive first aid. Nevertheless, they are determined to struggle for the future that the Syrian war, the sealed Greek borders and the EU – Turkey agreement have deprived them from.

Their claims are those for a dignified life against the despair and the dead end road they were led to.

We are supporting their cause and claims, we’re standing by their side in solidarity during their struggle for asylum and we’re sharing their hopes for a better life.
